How to Install a Reverse Camera: Steps and What You Need
Installing a reverse camera means mounting the camera at the back, running its video cable to the screen, giving it power from the reverse light circuit, and connecting a trigger wire so the screen switches over when you select reverse. The cable run is most of the work. Done well, it is hidden all the way and the picture appears every time.
What you need
- A camera that suits the car: number plate, tailgate handle or flush mount. See the reverse camera buyer's guide.
- A screen with a camera input: most touchscreen head units have one.
- The video cable that comes with the camera, and trim tools to hide it.
- A test light or multimeter, connectors, and a good earth point.
The steps
- Mount the camera: centred above the number plate or in the tailgate, with a clear view and the right way up.
- Run the cable into the car: through an existing tailgate or boot grommet, so water stays out.
- Route it to the dash: under the headlining or along the sill trim, away from moving parts, seat rails and pinch points.
- Power the camera: from the reverse light positive at the back, with the earth to bare metal.
- Connect the trigger: the head unit's reverse or camera trigger wire, so it switches to the camera in reverse.
- Plug in the video: to the head unit's camera input.
- Set up and test: the guide lines, the mirror setting, and the picture in daylight and at night.
Our guide to reverse camera wiring explains the three connections in more detail.
Where DIY installs go wrong
- A cable pinched or worn at the tailgate hinge: the picture fails later. See reverse camera black screen.
- Unsteady power: cars that pulse the reverse lights make the picture flicker. See reverse camera flickering.
- A camera mounted upside down: see the upside down fix.
- A factory camera on a new head unit: it often needs an adapter to work.
Have it fitted
We fit reverse cameras at your home or work, with the cable hidden and the trigger tested: see reverse camera installation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install a reverse camera myself?
Yes, if you are comfortable removing trim and wiring into the reverse light. The cable run through the tailgate is the fiddly part.
Where does a reverse camera get its power?
Usually from the reverse light circuit, so it only turns on in reverse. The earth goes to bare metal near the camera.
Do I need a new head unit for a reverse camera?
Only if your current screen has no camera input. Otherwise the camera plugs into the existing unit.
Is a wireless reverse camera easier to install?
It saves the cable run to the dash, but the picture can drop out. A wired camera is more reliable for a car that keeps it.
