Reverse Camera Upside Down or Mirrored? How to Fix It

14 October 2026
Updated

A reverse camera that shows the picture upside down or mirrored is almost always a mounting or a setting issue, not a faulty camera. Upside down usually means the camera is mounted the wrong way up. Mirrored, where left and right are swapped, usually means a mirror or flip setting on the camera or the screen needs changing.

Upside down: check how it is mounted

Many cameras are made to sit one way up, often with an arrow or a mark showing which side is the top. If the camera was fitted with that side down, the picture turns over. Re-mount it the right way up, and make sure the lens still has a clear view.

Mirrored: check the mirror setting

A reversing view is normally shown as a mirror image, so that turning the wheel to the right moves the picture the way it would in a mirror. Some cameras have a mirror option, a wire or a switch that turns this on or off, and some head units have a camera mirror or flip setting in the menu. If left and right feel backwards, switch that setting and test it.

Check the head unit settings

Look in the camera or reverse settings of your head unit for options such as mirror, flip, rotate or camera type. The names differ between units. The manual shows where yours is.

Still wrong?

If the camera was fitted by someone else, the wiring or the camera type may not match the screen. A technician can check it during a visit. See our reverse camera installation page, or read how a reverse camera is wired and the reverse camera buyer's guide if you are choosing a new one.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my reverse camera showing the picture upside down?

The most common reason is that the camera is mounted the wrong way up. Turning it the right way up fixes it. Some head units also have a rotate option.

Why is my reverse camera image mirrored?

A mirror or flip setting is set the wrong way on the camera or the screen. Change it and check that left and right move the way you expect.

Should a reverse camera image be mirrored?

Most reversing views are shown as a mirror image so they behave like a rear-view mirror. If it feels wrong, change the setting until it feels natural.

Can a reverse camera be fixed without replacing it?

Often yes, because the cause is usually the mounting or a setting. If the picture is blank or flickering, the cause may be the wiring or the camera itself.
