Reverse Camera Wiring Explained: How a Reversing Camera Connects
A reverse camera needs three connections: a video cable that carries the picture to the screen, a power supply, and a trigger signal that tells the screen to switch to the camera when you select reverse. The power and trigger usually come from the reverse light wiring, which is why the picture appears only when you reverse.
1. The video connection
The camera's picture travels down a cable, usually from the number plate or boot area to the front of the car, where it connects to the camera input on the head unit. The cable has to be run under the trim and through the cabin without being pinched, which is where most of the installation time goes.
2. The power connection
The camera needs 12 volts. It is commonly taken from the reverse light circuit at the back of the car, so the camera turns on only when the car is in reverse. That keeps it from running all the time and keeps the wiring neat.
3. The reverse trigger
The head unit needs to know when to show the camera. A reverse trigger wire carries a signal from the reverse light circuit to a dedicated input on the head unit, and the screen then switches to the camera picture. When you leave reverse, it switches back.
Wireless reverse cameras
A wireless camera sends the picture through the air to a receiver, so there is no video cable to run down the car. It still needs power at the camera, usually from the reverse light, and the receiver still has to connect to your screen. The picture can be less stable than a wired one in some vehicles.
Factory screens and CAN bus cars
If the car already has a screen without a camera input, you may need an interface to add one. In many modern cars the reverse signal is sent over the CAN bus instead of on a simple wire, which needs a more capable module. That is why some jobs take longer and why the exact car matters. Our reverse camera cost guide explains how this changes the price.
Common faults
- No picture in reverse: usually a missing trigger wire or no power at the camera.
- Flickering picture: often a power or ground problem, or a poorly connected video plug.
- Camera shows all the time or at the wrong time: the trigger is connected to the wrong circuit.
Mistakes in this wiring can damage electronics or leave the camera stuck on, so most people choose a professional. We fit cameras at your home or work anywhere in Auckland. See reverse camera installation and the reverse camera buyer's guide.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the reverse camera only work in reverse?
The head unit switches to the camera when it receives a reverse trigger signal from the reverse light circuit, and switches back when you leave reverse.
Does a wireless reverse camera need wiring?
Yes, it still needs power at the camera, usually from the reverse light, even though the picture is sent through the air.
Why is my reverse camera not working?
Check for power at the camera, the trigger connection and the video plug. A missing trigger or power connection is the most common cause.
Can I add a reverse camera to my factory screen?
Often yes with the right interface, but it depends on the car. Tell us your make, model and year and we will confirm what works.
