Reverse Camera Flickering? Why It Happens and How to Fix It

18 October 2026

A flickering reverse camera is almost always a power or wiring problem, not a faulty camera. The camera needs steady power and a clean video signal. Anything that pulses the power, breaks the earth for a moment, or adds interference to the video shows up as flicker or a rolling picture.

Common causes

  • Pulsed reverse light power: many modern cars check their bulbs by pulsing the power, and the camera, which often takes power from the reverse light, flickers with it.
  • LED reverse bulbs: fitting LED bulbs can change how the car supplies the circuit, which can cause flicker or a black screen.
  • A poor earth: a loose or corroded earth gives an unstable supply.
  • A worn cable: the video or power cable can wear where it bends through the tailgate or boot hinge, so the picture breaks up when the boot moves.
  • Interference: a video cable run alongside power cables can pick up noise, seen as lines or rolling.
  • Wireless cameras: a wireless link can be interrupted, which shows as flicker or freezing.

How each one is fixed

  • Pulsed power: a relay or a filter between the reverse light and the camera gives it a steady supply.
  • Earth: clean the contact and fix the earth to bare metal.
  • Worn cable: replace the damaged section and protect it where it flexes.
  • Interference: re-route the video cable away from power cables.
  • Wireless: a wired camera gives the steadiest picture for a car that keeps it full time.

Check the head unit setting too

If the picture rolls constantly rather than flickering now and then, the camera and screen may be set for different video formats. Check the camera setting in the head unit menu. If the image is upside down or mirrored instead, see that fix guide.

When to get help

If you are not sure where the power comes from or how the cable runs, a technician can test it. We fit and repair reverse cameras at your home or work: see reverse camera installation and how a reverse camera is wired.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my reverse camera flicker when I reverse?

Usually the camera's power is not steady. Many cars pulse the reverse light circuit, which the camera often uses for power.

Can LED reverse bulbs make the camera flicker?

Yes. LED bulbs can change how the car supplies the circuit. A relay or filter usually fixes it.

Why does the picture break up when I open the boot?

The cable is likely worn where it bends through the boot or tailgate hinge. Replacing that section fixes it.

Is a wired camera better than wireless for flicker?

Yes. A wired camera does not depend on a wireless signal, so it gives a steadier picture.
