How Much Does Dash Cam Installation Cost in NZ?
Dash cam installation cost depends on how the camera is powered, how many cameras there are, and your car. A front camera plugged into the accessory socket is the simplest job. A hardwired front and rear camera with parking mode takes more time, because the cables are hidden in the headliner and trim and the camera is wired to the fuse box. Here is what changes the price.
Plug-in or hardwired
- Plug-in: the camera runs from the accessory socket. Quick, but the cable is harder to hide and the socket is taken.
- Hardwired: the camera is wired to the fuse box with a hardwire kit, so the socket stays free, the cable is hidden and parking mode can work. Our guide on how to hardwire a dash cam explains it.
What changes the price
- Front, or front and rear: a rear camera means a second cable run the length of the car.
- Your car: a hatchback, wagon, ute or van each route the rear cable differently, and some trim takes longer to remove and refit.
- Parking mode: recording while the car is parked needs a hardwire kit with a low-voltage cut-off. See parking mode and your battery.
- The camera: some cameras need extra parts, such as a separate GPS module or a particular hardwire kit.
Why there is no price in this guide
A figure in an article cannot account for your car or the camera you choose. We confirm one installed price in the free quote, once we know your make, model and year and whether you want a rear camera and parking mode.
How to get a clear price
Send your make, model and year, the camera you have or want, and whether you want a rear camera and parking mode. Ask for one installed price that includes the hardwire kit and labour. We fit dash cams at your home or work anywhere in Auckland: see dash cam installation, and our guide to where to mount a dash cam.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install a dash cam myself?
A plug-in camera, yes. Hardwiring means working in the fuse box and behind trim, so many people have it fitted.
Is hardwiring worth it?
If you want a tidy install with no cable in view, or parking mode, yes. If you only want the camera recording while you drive, a plug-in camera can be enough.
Will a hardwired dash cam drain my battery?
A hardwire kit with a low-voltage cut-off turns the camera off before the battery runs too low, so the car still starts.
How long does a dash cam install take?
A front camera is quicker than a front and rear camera. Most installs are done within 1 to 2 hours.
