Nissan Leaf CarPlay and English Conversion in NZ
Most Nissan Leafs on NZ roads are Japanese imports, and they arrive with a Japanese factory screen and no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The Leaf is not a plain stereo swap, because that screen also shows the battery, charging and climate information. The usual fix is a Leaf-specific interface that adds CarPlay, Android Auto and English while keeping those displays and the reversing camera working.
Does the Nissan Leaf have CarPlay?
Not the Japanese-market units most NZ Leafs have. Some later Leafs sold new in other countries do, but an imported Leaf almost always has Japanese menus, a satnav for Japan and no phone mirroring.
Why the Leaf needs a different approach
In most cars, the stereo can be removed and replaced. In the Leaf, the factory screen is wired into the car's data, including the state of charge, charging information and the climate timer. Removing it without the right interface can lose those features. A Leaf-specific interface keeps them while adding CarPlay and Android Auto.
English menus and the radio
The conversion gives you English menus. Japanese radios also cover a lower FM band than NZ, so some stations are missing. See the FM band expander guide and changing a Japanese car radio to English.
Radio code
Some Leaf units ask for a code after the 12V battery is disconnected. See what to do when a Japanese car radio asks for a code.

Frequently asked questions
Can you add Apple CarPlay to a Nissan Leaf?
Yes. A Leaf-specific interface adds CarPlay and Android Auto while keeping the battery display and camera.
Will I lose the battery and charging display?
Not with the right interface. That is why a Leaf is not done as a plain head unit swap.
Can a Leaf be converted to English?
Yes. The conversion gives you English menus, and CarPlay or Android Auto gives you maps on your phone.
