Car Stereo Wiring Harness: What It Does and Which One You Need

19 October 2026

A car stereo wiring harness adapter connects a new head unit to your car without cutting the factory wiring. One end plugs into the car's original stereo plug, the other joins the head unit's own harness, and the job can be undone later. Many cars also need an antenna adapter, a steering wheel control interface or an amplifier harness alongside it.

Why not just cut the wires?

  • It can be undone: the factory plug stays as it was, which matters when you sell the car or refit the original unit.
  • Fewer faults: crimped and soldered joins behind a dash are a common source of crackles, dead speakers and battery drain.
  • Faster and tidier: a plug-in harness joins on the bench, not upside down under the dash.

The standard aftermarket colours

Most aftermarket head units use the same colour code on their own harness. Factory plugs differ from car to car, which is exactly why the adapter exists. Always check the manual for your unit.

  • Yellow: constant 12V, keeps the clock and settings.
  • Red: accessory 12V, switches the unit on with the key.
  • Black: earth.
  • Blue or blue and white: turn-on lead for a powered antenna or an amplifier.
  • Orange: illumination, dims the screen with the headlights.
  • Speakers: white is front left, grey front right, green rear left, purple rear right. The striped wire of each pair is negative.

Adapters that often go with the harness

  • Antenna adapter: many cars, including Japanese imports, use a different aerial plug from aftermarket units. Some also need power for an aerial amplifier. See poor radio reception after a new stereo.
  • Steering wheel control interface: keeps the audio buttons on the wheel working. See what a steering control interface does.
  • Amplifier harness: cars with a factory amplifier need it switched on, or there is no sound.
  • Camera adapter: lets a factory reversing camera work with the new screen.

Finding the right one

The harness is specific to the make, model and often the year. Our stereo fit checker shows the fitting details for common NZ cars, and we confirm every adapter before the job. We fit head units with the correct harness at your home or work: see head unit installation.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a wiring harness to install a car stereo?

You can install one without, by cutting and joining wires, but a harness adapter is cleaner, safer and reversible. It is the right way to do it.

Why does my car stereo lose its settings when I turn the car off?

The yellow constant and red accessory wires are usually swapped, or the constant feed is missing. The unit then loses power every time the key is off.

Is a car stereo wiring harness universal?

The head unit side mostly follows a standard. The car side is specific to the make and model, so buy the harness for your car.

Why is there no sound after fitting a new stereo?

Often the car has a factory amplifier that is not being switched on, or a speaker lead is not connected. An amplifier harness or the blue turn-on wire usually fixes it.
