How to Choose a Car Head Unit in NZ: 9 Things to Check Before You Buy
The right car head unit is one that fits your dash, supports the phone system you use, keeps your steering wheel controls working and comes with a real warranty and proper installation. Screen size and brand matter less than getting those basics right. Use this nine-point checklist before you buy.
1. Will it fit your dash?
Head units come in single DIN and double DIN sizes, and some cars need a vehicle-specific fascia kit to look factory-neat. Check what your dash opening takes before choosing a unit. Our guide to single DIN vs double DIN explains the sizes.
2. CarPlay and Android Auto
Choose a unit that supports the system your phone uses, and ideally both, so it suits any phone you have later. Decide whether you want wired or wireless. Wireless vs wired CarPlay covers the trade-offs.
3. Screen size and quality
Bigger is not always better. Check that the screen is bright enough to read in sun, responds smoothly to touch and is a size your dash can show neatly. A 7 inch screen suits many dashes, while larger screens sit proud of the dash and suit some cars better than others.
4. Camera inputs
If you want a reverse camera, make sure the unit has a camera input, and ask whether it supports a front camera too. See our reverse camera buyer's guide.
5. Steering wheel controls
Many cars need a control adapter to keep wheel buttons working, and some need a CAN bus interface. Check that the unit supports one, and ask whether any extra part changes the price.
6. Sound features
Look at the built-in amplifier power, equaliser controls and pre-outs if you plan to add an external amplifier later. For most drivers, a good built-in amplifier and a tidy installation matter more than a long list of features.
7. Bluetooth calling
Hands-free calling is only as good as the microphone. Ask where the microphone is placed and whether an external one is included.
8. Software and speed
A slow, laggy unit is frustrating every day. Read reviews about responsiveness and software updates, not just the specification sheet.
9. Warranty and installation
Look for a clear warranty on both the unit and the installation. Our AT-LX09, for example, has a 7 inch HD touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 45W x 4 audio output and steering wheel control integration, with a 2-year warranty and a free reverse camera when installed. Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a head unit and a car stereo?
They mean the same thing. A head unit is the main stereo unit in the dash that controls audio, and on modern units, CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth and cameras.
Do I need a double DIN head unit?
Only if your dash opening takes one, or can be fitted with the right kit. Many modern CarPlay units are double DIN or use a floating screen. Check what suits your car before buying.
Can I fit a head unit myself?
It is possible, but a good result needs the right fascia kit, a plug-in wiring harness and often a steering control adapter. Most people choose a professional installer to protect the car's wiring and keep factory features working.
How long does installation take?
Most car stereo installs take 1 to 2 hours, depending on the vehicle and whether a camera is being added.
