6x9 vs 6.5 Inch Car Speakers: Which Fits Your Car?

21 October 2026

6x9 and 6.5 inch car speakers are not a free choice, because the mounts in your car decide which one fits each position. 6.5 inch round speakers are the most common size for doors, and 6x9 oval speakers usually sit in a sedan's rear shelf or in some doors. Where you have a choice, a 6x9 has more cone area and tends to give more bass.

Where each size usually goes

  • 6.5 inch round: front and rear doors in a great many cars, including most hatchbacks and Japanese imports.
  • 6x9 oval: the rear parcel shelf of many sedans, and the doors of some larger cars and utes.
  • Other sizes: plenty of cars use their own sizes, such as smaller round speakers in the dash or rear trims.

Send us your make, model and year and we confirm the size for each position, or check the stereo fit checker for your car's install notes.

How they sound different

A 6x9 has a larger, oval cone, so on paper it moves more air and gives more mid bass than a 6.5 inch speaker. A good 6.5 inch speaker in a well-sealed front door still sounds clearer than a cheap 6x9 on the shelf, because the front speakers set what you hear. Spend on the front first.

Mounting depth matters as much as size

Two speakers of the same size can need different depths behind the mount. A speaker that is too deep hits the window glass or the regulator in a door. We check the depth and use the right adapter bracket so it seals properly.

Coaxial or component?

Both sizes come as coaxial speakers, with the tweeter in the middle, or as component sets with a separate tweeter. Coaxials are the simple drop-in upgrade. Components give a clearer sound stage in the front doors but take longer to fit.

When a 6x9 speaker box makes sense

In a ute, van or hatch with no shelf mounts, a pair of 6x9 speakers in a box can add rear fill or a little more bass without cutting the car. For real low bass, a subwoofer does far more than a boxed 6x9.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put 6x9 speakers where 6.5 inch speakers go?

Not without cutting the door or trim, which we do not recommend. Fit the size the car was designed for and use a subwoofer if you want more bass.

Are 6x9 speakers better than 6.5 inch speakers?

They give more bass on paper because the cone is bigger, but quality and the position matter more. Good front speakers make the biggest difference.

Do 6x9 speakers need an amplifier?

No. Most run well on a head unit's built-in power. An amplifier adds volume and control if you want it.

What size speakers are in my car?

It depends on the make, model and year and on the position. Send us your car details and we will confirm each size and the mounting depth.
