Wireless CarPlay Keeps Disconnecting? How to Fix It
Wireless CarPlay keeps disconnecting when the link between the iPhone and the head unit is interrupted. It starts over Bluetooth and then runs over a direct Wi-Fi connection, so anything that disturbs either one drops it. Most cases are fixed by pairing again, keeping the phone cool, or updating the software.
Fixes on the iPhone
- Forget the car and pair again: go to Settings, then General, then CarPlay, choose the car and tap Forget This Car. Then pair from scratch.
- Keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on: turning Wi-Fi off in Control Centre or a shortcut can break wireless CarPlay even though it does not join your home network.
- Turn off VPN and hotspot: a VPN or a personal hotspot can get in the way of the car's Wi-Fi link.
- Update iOS: CarPlay bugs are often fixed in updates.
- Restart the phone: it clears stuck connections.
Heat
Navigation, music and wireless charging at once make an iPhone hot, especially on the dash in summer. A hot phone can drop CarPlay or dim the screen. If it disconnects mainly on sunny days or long trips, move the phone out of direct sun or off the wireless charging pad.
The head unit or adapter
Check the head unit for a firmware update. If you use a plug-in wireless adapter to make factory wired CarPlay wireless, the adapter is one more link that can fail. Update its firmware, or test with a cable: if wired CarPlay is stable, the adapter is the weak point. We compare the two in CarPlay adapter vs a new head unit.
When it is the car, not the phone
If a second iPhone also drops out in the same car, the fault is in the head unit, the adapter or the antenna and wiring behind the dash. A head unit with built-in wireless CarPlay is usually more stable than an add-on adapter. See Apple CarPlay installation and how wireless CarPlay works.
Frequently asked questions
Why does wireless CarPlay disconnect and reconnect?
The Wi-Fi link between the iPhone and the car is breaking for a moment. Pairing problems, heat, a VPN, or a head unit or adapter fault are the usual causes.
Is wired CarPlay more reliable than wireless?
Wired CarPlay has fewer things to go wrong and charges the phone. Wireless is more convenient. Our wireless vs wired comparison covers the trade-offs.
Do wireless CarPlay adapters disconnect more?
They add an extra link between the phone and the car, so they can. Keep the adapter's firmware up to date, and test with a cable to see whether the adapter is the problem.
Will a new head unit fix it?
If the fault is in the old unit or an adapter, yes. Test with a second phone and a cable first, so you know where the problem sits.
