Does My Car Have Apple CarPlay? How to Check in 2 Minutes
The quickest way to check is to plug your iPhone into the car's USB port with a good cable and look at the screen. If the car has Apple CarPlay, a prompt or a CarPlay icon appears. You can also open Settings, then General, then CarPlay on the iPhone and look for your car. If nothing shows up, the car most likely does not have CarPlay. Most Japanese import stereos in NZ do not, and a new head unit adds it.
Check in two minutes
- Use a data cable: a charge-only cable will never start CarPlay.
- Try the right USB port: some cars only run CarPlay from one port, often marked with a phone or CarPlay symbol.
- Unlock the iPhone and allow CarPlay: accept the prompt on the phone and on the car screen.
- Check the iPhone: Settings, then General, then CarPlay lists cars it can connect to.
- Look in the car: a CarPlay or smartphone menu in the screen settings, or a mention in the owner's manual.
CarPlay may be there but hidden
- Siri is off: CarPlay needs Siri turned on in the iPhone settings.
- Screen Time is blocking it: check Screen Time, then Content and Privacy Restrictions, then Allowed Apps, and make sure CarPlay is allowed.
- Switched off in the car: some cars have a setting to turn smartphone connection on or off.

Wired or wireless?
If CarPlay only starts with a cable, your car has wired CarPlay. A wireless adapter can make it wireless: see CarPlay adapter vs a new head unit.
If your car does not have CarPlay
Most older cars and nearly all Japanese import stereos do not have it. A new head unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto adds it, usually with English menus and the full NZ FM dial too. See adding CarPlay to an older car, check what fits with the stereo fit checker, or see Apple CarPlay installation.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my car supports CarPlay?
Plug in your iPhone with a data cable and look for the CarPlay prompt, or check Settings, General, CarPlay on the iPhone.
Why does my car not show CarPlay?
The car may not have it, the cable may be charge-only, Siri may be off, or Screen Time may be blocking CarPlay.
Do Japanese import cars have CarPlay?
Most do not. Japanese-market stereos usually have Japanese menus and no CarPlay, so a new head unit is the usual fix.
Can I add CarPlay to a car that does not have it?
Yes. A new CarPlay head unit fits most cars, and some factory screens can take a CarPlay module.
