Can You Use Apple CarPlay on an Android Phone?
No. Apple CarPlay works only with iPhones, so you cannot use it with an Android phone. Android phones use Android Auto, which gives you the same kind of car screen with maps, music, calls and voice control. If you have an Android phone, Android Auto is the real equivalent.
What to use instead
Android Auto shows your phone's driving apps on the car screen using Google Assistant. Most cars and head units that support CarPlay also support Android Auto, so you usually do not need to choose between them. Read our Android Auto guide for what it does and what you need.
What about apps called "CarPlay for Android"?
Some apps use a name like that, but they are launcher-style apps with a car-style look. They are not Apple CarPlay and do not give you the same system. For a proper car screen on an Android phone, Android Auto is the one to use.
If you might switch phones
If you move between Android and iPhone, or your household uses both, choose a head unit that supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Whichever phone connects, the screen works. We fit these at your home or work across Auckland. See head unit installation or Apple CarPlay vs Android Auto.
Frequently asked questions
Why does CarPlay not work with Android?
CarPlay is Apple's system and is built to run from an iPhone. Android phones run Android Auto, which is Google's version of the same idea.
Is there a CarPlay app for Android?
Apps with that kind of name exist, but they are not Apple CarPlay. Android Auto is the proper system for Android phones.
Can one head unit work with both Android and iPhone?
Yes. Many head units support both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so either phone can connect.
