CarPlay No Sound? What to Check for Music, Maps and Calls
CarPlay with no sound is usually a volume or output setting, not a fault. The quickest way to find the cause is to ask what is silent: one app, all of CarPlay, or every source including the radio. Each points somewhere different.
Only one app is silent
- Apple Maps has no directions: open Maps on the phone, tap your profile, then Preferences, and check the spoken directions volume is not set to no voice.
- Google Maps or Waze is silent: both have their own sound setting inside the app. Set it to sound on, not muted or alerts only.
- Spotify or a podcast app is silent: close the app fully on the phone and open it again, and check it is not playing to another device.
All CarPlay audio is silent
- Turn up the volume while CarPlay is playing: many head units keep a separate volume level for CarPlay, radio and calls.
- Check where the iPhone is sending sound: if earbuds or a speaker are connected, the sound may go there. Disconnect them.
- Check the head unit is not muted: some units mute automatically when a call ends or the reverse camera is on.
- Restart both: restart the iPhone, and switch the car off so the head unit shuts down fully.
- Forget the car and pair again: in Settings, then General, then CarPlay.
Calls have no sound
Check the call volume during a call, because it is often set separately. If people cannot hear you, the microphone may be unplugged or badly placed. After an aftermarket install, the microphone is a separate part that must be fitted and connected.
No sound from anything, even the radio
That is not CarPlay. It usually means the head unit, a blown fuse, or the speaker or amplifier wiring. Cars with a factory amplifier need the right harness when a new head unit goes in, or the amplifier never switches on and there is no sound at all. Our guide to car stereo problems covers the checks.
When to get help
If an app setting or the volume fixed it, you are done. If there is no sound from any source after a new head unit was fitted, the wiring needs checking. We fit head units with the correct harness for factory amplifiers: see Apple CarPlay installation and nine more CarPlay fixes.
Frequently asked questions
Why is CarPlay connected but there is no sound?
Usually the CarPlay volume on the head unit is low, the sound is going to earbuds or another speaker, or the app itself is muted.
Why does Apple Maps not talk through CarPlay?
The spoken directions setting in Maps may be set to no voice, or the navigation volume is low. Check the setting in Maps preferences.
Why is there no sound on calls through CarPlay?
Call volume is often set separately from music. If the other person cannot hear you, the microphone may not be connected or placed well.
No sound after a new stereo was fitted. What is wrong?
If there is no sound from any source, the head unit wiring is the likely cause, often a factory amplifier that is not being switched on.
